Skype is best known for their easy-to-use peer-to-peer telephony client. They are clearly the leader in the field with a whopping ~215 million registered users. The company was purchased by Ebay in 2005 for $2.6 billion. Recently, the service made news when it was unavailable for use for about two days. The outage occurred when Microsoft’s Windows OS caused the simultaneous reboot of millions of computers due to a recently installed software patch. When millions of computers attempted to connect to Skype, it was quite a bit more strain that the servers could handle.
Their offices are pretty slick, and are of course, located in the same building as the Ebay offices we posted a couple days ago. One of my favorite elements of the office is the wall of clocks, which is made extra special by the addition of cuckoo clocks.
