  • Unispace has recently designed and outfitted a new head office in Auckland, New Zealand for global energy company BP Oil.

The new space was to bring together the functions and staff from the existing head office in Wellington, and from the existing Auckland office. Due to leasing and property constraints, this created a tight timeframe for design and construction.

The space for the new BP Oil New Zealand Head Office was located across two floors of an existing building. There was a creative challenge to effectively create a physical link between the two floors in order to facilitate and enhance collaboration and inter-departmental interaction.

Unispace held extensive strategic visioning sessions with the executive team of BP, and together we created a brief for an environment that harnesses raw organic energy and radiates it out from a central source. The stunning spiral stair became the central connecting element of the design, enabling interactions and linking the business units.

All of the elements directly off the spiral also shared this language and radial forms reference the central source. The timber used is NZ black beech, a sustainable hardwood, chosen for its raw, imperfect appearance and grain. The timber bands wrap around the stair in an organic, unconstrained way to emphasise the notion of raw energy.

BP branding and brand colours were very strong throughout the space, and reinforced through imagery and photography.

We have created a space that is playful and fun, and that people enjoy being in.
