Mimecast – Watertown Global Headquarters
Unispace has completed the design of a new headquarters for software company Mimecast.
Mimecast is an industry leader in email security and management software solutions. The decision to move the company’s global headquarters to Watertown, MA challenged Unispace to develop a workplace that would reflect an established brand, support rapid growth, and enable the hiring and retention of top talent outside of downtown Boston.
Unispace worked closely with the international and local leadership teams to establish a core vision for the design. Focused on openness and transparency with a strong sense of security, the new workplace transitioned to a fully open plan environment where even the CEO sits out in the open floor. This shift enhanced communication, problem solving, and decision making throughout the organization. The use of glass fronts on conference rooms and training areas allows for greater natural light penetration into large open areas and underscores the company’s commitment to transparency.
Communicating this well-established company’s longevity was critical to the design of Mimecast’s new headquarters. A large, custom board room table made from a reclaimed Maine oak and a reception desk made from the same tree emphasize the company’s enduring reputation. Uncovered brick walls and sandblasted natural wood beams throughout the space further communicate the timeless nature of the building. Open plan sectional seating, phone booths, and a central ‘coffee shop’ serving free beer, fresh fruit smoothies and high quality coffee offers employees alternative work environments. In keeping with the company’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of its employees, a yoga studio and a sleep room provide staff with areas to break away from their daily grind, relax, or workout.
