The Kennel Club first approached MCM Architecture in 2011 to support their property team when the site surrounding The Kennel Club’s premises on Clarges Street was acquired by developers. The Kennel Club are a unique organisation renowned worldwide for their work in support of dogs within all walks of life.

The MCM team worked closely with The Club Management Team to develop a concept that worked for them, and worked as part of the overall site development plan. They knew what they wanted to achieve, and, most importantly, knew what the Club Membership (and their dogs!) would want to see in their new building.

The end result, which was recently formally opened by Princess Anne, a regular visitor to the Club herself, contains all of the key elements of the original building: the Gallery, Archive and Library, which contains the most complete historical body of canine related literature in the world, together with a peerless collection of art; the Club Room and Restaurant, which occupy the whole of the first floor of the building and combine the feel of some of the great London Clubs with a warmth and friendliness which absolutely reflects the character of The Kennel Club; and the Office Space, which are the engine room of the organization.

The new workspaces are light, open and airy, and have transformed communication throughout the whole organization. The site configuration, and sightline constraints have worked to the club’s advantage and enabled us to create a series of external terraces which are accessed from the working floors, and a winter garden as part of the club space. It was important that ambience of the club was retained, along with all the existing amenities, whilst at the same time creating a modern, efficient, effective working environment that more accurately reflected the way that the club operates today, and was capable of adapting to change in the coming years. The resultant design feels like it has always been there.

The Developer is proud to have delivered such a special building for the Kennel Club, and MCM are proud to have delivered a space that both the Club Members and the Club Staff have taken to their hearts.
