  • Bahrain, meaning “two seas,” symbolises convergence – of salt and fresh water, tradition and modernity, commerce and culture. This idea of duality informed the design concept for the Al Mabarrah Al Khalifia Foundation in Bahrain, an institution dedicated to youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and community development. The project translates the Foundation’s mission into a spatial environment that actively supports learning, innovation, and social impact.

Rather than creating a conventional institutional setting, the design proposes a hybrid ecosystem where education, workplace, and civic functions are seamlessly integrated. The spatial strategy dissolves rigid zoning in favour of interconnected environments that encourage collaboration between entrepreneurs, students, and mentors. This approach reflects the Foundation’s role as a platform where ideas, people, and opportunities intersect.

The design is grounded in evidence-based principles from environmental psychology, recognising that diverse spatial conditions enhance focus, creativity, and engagement. As a result, the building offers a spectrum of experiences, from informal social spaces such as reception lounges and a café, to structured environments including meeting rooms, incubator workspaces, and a multipurpose hall for workshops, talks, and community events.

Circulation areas are intentionally designed as active social connectors rather than passive corridors, encouraging informal interaction and spontaneous exchange. These moments of encounter are seen as essential to fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing within entrepreneurial communities.

Materiality and detailing reinforce the building’s functional and experiential goals. Durable and acoustically effective materials, such as Ege Carpets, are used in public areas to support comfort and performance in high-traffic zones.

Custom joinery integrates storage and functional elements into the architectural fabric, maintaining visual clarity while enhancing usability.
Furniture selection combines durability with design quality, featuring pieces from Pedrali, Marelli, B&T, Alea, Sedus, Kastel, and True Design, alongside bespoke elements by Metaliks. Sanitary fittings from Ideal Standard and Grohe were chosen for their reliability and suitability for long-term public use.

Lighting plays a central role in shaping atmosphere and usability. A layered strategy combines architectural lighting with decorative fixtures from Flos, Foscarini, Artemide, Marset, Arkos, and Novoluce. Sculptural elements such as Flos Noctambule and Foscarini Twiggy introduce warmth and identity, while integrated LED systems ensure functional clarity across work and learning environments.

The project is guided by an evidence-based design approach, recognising the blurred boundaries between learning, working, and social interaction in contemporary life. As articulated by Roar’s Founder, Pallavi Dean, the goal was to create an environment where formal education, mentoring, and informal exchange coexist naturally within the same spatial framework.

Ultimately, the Al Mabarrah Al Khalifia Foundation is conceived not simply as a building, but as a civic platform, one that embodies Bahrain’s spirit of convergence while enabling learning, entrepreneurship, and community growth.
