  • Gresham Smith helped CSX Transportation Inc. relocate and design a new office space for 800 of the company’s Intermodal and Technology department employees.

CSX Transportation Inc., one of the nation’s leading transportation companies providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transportation services, needed to relocate 800 employees from their Intermodal and Technology departments into 176,000 square feet of newly leased office space. CSX wanted the space – located adjacent to their headquarters in downtown Jacksonville – to evolve and enhance their work environment while also supporting their vision of innovation, sustainability and commitment to collaboration.

Utilizing a workplace strategies initiative, the design incorporates “me to we” spaces through the use of efficient individual workstations, flexible teaming areas and an open floorplan. Each floor is equipped with cyber cafés and enclaves for private discussions or personal phone calls, and all offer daylight and outdoor views. The LEED Gold-certified space incorporates multiple green design and construction features including air quality monitors and HVAC system sensors, waterless urinals, construction waste recycling, use of local recycled building materials, and a system that reduces office lighting when sunlight is sufficient.

The workplace design aligns with CSX’s culture by producing a collaborative, flexible, open, fun and energetic office environment. The design also supports CSX’s commitment to eco-friendly practices and has optimized their energy consumption. By incorporating strategic workplace initiatives, CSX has achieved a dramatic reduction in the real estate required by their Intermodal and Technology departments while enhancing the performance of the workplace. The relocation, in essence, became the springboard to align the office environment with the company’s refreshed branding and new tag line – as it appears on the side of a train boxcar – “How Tomorrow Moves.”
