  • Random Studio is a creative studio and technology workshop based in Amsterdam who recently moved into a new office designed by X+L Studio.

Random Studio is made up of designers, programmers, animators and artists whose mantra is to inspire through technology and design, who for the past 8 years were based on the Amstel River – at the MD’s old apartment.  After taking on 16 new staff in less than 12 months it became obvious a new space was needed. The new location at Westzaanstraat 10 was chosen – all 475m2 of it. The architect company X+L, has a rich history in both interior and set design so they were the obvious choice to help make the new space feel like ‘home’. The brief was simple – create a space that would feel open but still intimate; an environment that would invite creativity and stimulate the sharing of knowledge and inspiration.

It was important to Random that the space was visually beautiful but without it feeling too ‘designed’.  For this reason X+L focused on simple concepts that they knew would fit with Random’s persona. They filled the space with lush green plants – pockets of mini gardens on the floor and huge fabric bags hanging from the sealing filled with greenery. The mirrors, high ceilings and sky lights make use of the natural lighting. And the use of wood makes the space feel warm and inviting.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the cafeteria – lunch is cooked and served here everyday. The couches, pillows and individually selected small wooden tables make the perfect setting for talking, sharing ideas and inspiring. As you continue into the studio you come across the main working area –  this is where you really feel how expansive the space is. Desks are spaced out, art work covers the walls and the abundance of plants gives the feeling of calmness and space.

The studio also contains a sound studio, large meeting room, exhibition space and a garden complete with shipping container that hosts Random’s interactive installation workshop.
