  • Unispace has designed a new office space in Christchurch for New Zealand-based law firm Anderson Lloyd.

Anderson Lloyd is one of New Zealand’s top tier law firms, and the largest in the South Island with offices in Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown.

After the devastating Christchurch earthquake in 2012, Anderson Lloyd’s Christchurch office relocated from their city address to a temporary warehouse, converted into offices, in the suburbs. As part of the rebuild of not just their own office, but of the city, Anderson Lloyd signed up to occupy one of the first new buildings to be completed in the CBD.

Our brief was to create a place for Anderson Lloyd’s staff and clients that showed their connectivity to the community, reflected their southern values, and importantly was enduring, down to earth and creative. Maintaining the best areas for open plan to encourage cross team functionality and communication, the space was designed to feel warm and approachable, using natural, honest materials such macrocarpa timber, blue stone and recycled copper from surrounding demolished buildings.

The concept for the space was driven by the feeling of creating a connected community within the office, and was zoned into streets and village squares, dining and business districts, and so on. The graphics on the glazing were photographs taken in the surrounding Christchurch area, and artworks that Anderson Lloyd have sponsored in the community which also reflect the nature of the spatial zones.

Client space was an important factor for Anderson Lloyd; to help clients feel welcome the brief included the creation of a client lounge, complete with barista coffee. The boardroom can also open up to the kitchen space to accommodate large client functions. The building itself was designed with green features, with Anderson Lloyd keen to pick up on this in their own fit out by using 100% recyclable carpet tiles, low VOC paint, recycled materials, daylight sensing and proximity sensing lighting, green ceiling products to name but a few.

We worked very closely with Anderson Lloyd with regards to change management and helped to give our client the tools to enable a smooth, seamless transition into their new space as one of the first tenants in Christchurch’s revitalised CBD.
