Transurban Group develops and manages toll road networks in Australia and the United States. For its North American office headquarters in Tysons, Virginia, Transurban selected a site that offered a direct view of the Express Lanes it operates every day. With their headquarters in Australia and coworkers in distant time zones, Transurban USA staff often work irregular hours. They desired a space that offered flexibility, safe and comfortable surroundings, and the necessary technology to foster collaboration throughout the company.

The interior design maximizes views both for employees and for visitors. A ribbon wall of glass and wood slats creates a fluid physical barrier between public and private spaces, providing security and discretion for the workstations.

Along with Transurban’s open office work model of 100-percent benching, the Virginia office includes collaborative hubs—in an ovoid shape reminiscent of a highway interchange—to encourage interaction. The interchanges provide a buffer between workstation neighborhoods and, with a soft palette of natural wood, organic shapes and soft carpet, purposefully and playfully juxtapose the regularity of the workstations. Conference rooms are equipped for video calls that frequently occur with their Australian counterparts.
