Tokio Marine Offices – Jersey City
Vocon designed the offices for insurance company Tokio Marine, located in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Tokio Marine, an insurance company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, wanted to expand its current presence in New York City by offering its staff space to grow and collaborate. Company management partnered with Vocon, one of the country’s largest design firms and one of the top 40 design firms internationally, to move locations and design an office that supports its distinctive needs.
Providing adequate space for individual and group work was important in both new spaces. To ensure employees have the room necessary for day-to-day functions, as well as future growth, the services groups moved from New York to a 44,000 square foot space within a mall in New Jersey City. Completed in June 2017, the office provides large individual work stations as well as multi-purpose areas for increased efficiency and collaboration. In addition, local amenities, such as restaurants and shopping, encourage socialization and group bonding, while providing many of the same conveniences as the previous space in New York.
The design inspiration was natural elements, including light and air for balance and tranquility. Light wood and dark porcelain floors accent each other for a modern and sophisticated look. The company is using the office as the standard for additional spaces around the United States, to create a cohesive feel throughout all locations.
During production, more than 75 percent of the construction waste was recycled. In addition, sustainable elements were woven into the design to increase efficiency and reduce waste. Low-flow water fixtures and minimal watts per square foot reduce water and energy by 40 percent each. The company is pursuing LEED Gold Certifications for both spaces, and sustainable features of the buildings are highlighted with signage throughout the offices, to reinforce the importance of sustainability to both employees and guests.
