Trust and innovation is key to Celgene’s success in biopharmaceuticals – their new Melbourne workplace reflects these values and inspires their people.

Celgene is a global leader in their industry, developing lifechanging drugs treating cancer, immune and inflammatory conditions. Moving from a dark, city building spread across two levels, to a modern lightfilled space all on one level gave them the opportunity to align their workplace aesthetics with their values of innovation, trust and strong relationships.

Celgene saw this move as an chance to reinvigorate their people. They wanted their new workplace to challenge and encourage staff to step out of their offices and think differently. The space had to be somewhere that people were inspired by; a place they would be proud to show to their family and friends.

Celgene undertook a comprehensive strategic review of the needs of their people to see if they aligned with company requirements. This strategic brief provided clear goals for the new workplace: Break down the traditional silo model by creating an agile space that caters to the every day office-based worker, while allowing flexible space that welcomes transient field workers.

We designed the space around the activities they wanted to support – quiet zones for confidential work, creative spaces for brainstorming and a large café and breakout to socialise. The adjoining meeting rooms offer greater flexibility for larger in-house meetings, removing the need to hold quarterly meetings off-site.

Celgene’s new workplace is warm and welcoming, with a soft color palette complemented by timber elements. The building has great views from all sides, from Federation Square, to the city and out towards Port Phillip Bay. These aspects played an important role in the design, with the layout designed to maximize the outlook and a color scheme that complements the backdrop.
