  • Gensler has designed the offices for global structural engineer consultants Thornton Tomasetti, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Equipped with more collaboration space than ever before, Thornton Tomasetti breaks down silos and rethinks their Fort Lauderdale location. The open and bright office emphasizes wellbeing, collaboration, and sustainability. Employees can more easily team together with a plan that fosters more social interactions, as evidenced by having more collaboration seats than dedicated workstation seats. In lieu of a formal seating area at the reception, a combined library, lounge, and pantry space encourages guests and staff to gather together.

Social spaces and work neighborhoods are connected together with the design concept of a bridge. Ropes in the ceiling form a crisscross pattern—a reference to the structure of a bridge and nod to Thornton Tomasetti’s structural engineering roots—to act as a guide that leads to the central pantry hub. Finishes and color are used as a transition between work and public areas.

The plan moves private offices into the interior, giving the perimeter and its views and natural daylight back to more employees. All workstations are now standardized and are sit-to-stand, while hoteling workstations allow for added flexibility.

Two terraces off the central lounge area provide more space for employees and can be used during client-facing events. Exposed ceilings, polished concrete floors, and pops of bright color balance raw materiality with elements of refinement. With their new space, Thornton Tomasetti is better positioned to attract new talent and set themselves apart from other engineering firms.
