  • Convene Design has created a design for their offices and new coworking space located in New York City, New York.

Located in the heart of Lower Manhattan, the Convene HQ serves as the cultural hub for the high-growth meetings, workplace, and technology startup, as well as a model example for the future of the workplace.

Taking inspiration from the Japanese concept of Kintsugi, the design team at Convene chose to embrace the aged elements of the building and turn them into features—a concept they dubbed “embraced grit.” You can see this everywhere you look inside: the original terrazzo and mosaic flooring from 1907 that was left untouched, plaster ceilings with chips left exposed, and contractor markings on the concrete walls. While the standard operating procedure for a space such as this might call for covering these items with sheet rock, the design instead draws the eye to these elements, ensuring that the aesthetic of the 111-year-old building isn’t lost.

This concept contrasts beautifully with another design theory for the project—what the team calls “contained perfection.”

The perfect glass boxes set a precedent for privacy by using only ambient lighting and reflectivity to provide the ideal level of privacy for occupants. The glass reflects the light around it, resulting in a space that transitions beautifully from day to night. There’s an element of surprise and delight as you open the door. The interior of the meeting rooms are furnished in lush, colorful carpeting, which pay homage to the neo renaissance elements from the exterior of the building.

As a meeting, event, and office space, 101 Greenwich must provide choice of work environments and simplicity to users.

The finished product is a professional work environment unlike any other, full of contrasts and compliments, designed to be a place where people can feel comfortable and productive and let their best ideas come to life.
