For their new offices Gartner, the world’s leading research and advisory company, wanted a space that was both agile and performance driven. In addition, the company was intent on making significant internal changes by transitioning from private offices to an open work environment. This shift would ultimately result in 23% reduction in real estate while increasing space occupancy by nearly 40%. Given all these mandated changes, the task for the design team was more than just the design of a new corporate headquarters, it was to define a new way of working. This new work style would recognize shifting demographics by leveraging a culture of internal mobility and open collaboration over individual privacy and territorialism. Prior to design, the team embarked in a rigorous discovery process to better understand the culture and makeup of the staff and leadership. Through a combination of vision sessions, town hall meetings, staff surveys, and benchmarking site visits, the team gathered the necessary intelligence and established a conceptual baseline to inform the design process.

For the 12 stacked staff floors, the team created a rich menu of spaces where staff can efficiently and effortlessly navigate from assigned to non-assigned work spaces. The sheer number of work options allows individuals to customize their daily routine and maximize their time between focused, collaborative, social, and learning environments. However, work today is not just about efficiency and speed, it is also about socializing and community. The Café floor is the ideal place for staff to come together. Designed as a park-like environment, it offers dozens of seating and lounging arrangements inspired by the outdoors, including trees, benches, picnic tables, and even an alleyway. A destination floor rich with color and energy well-suited for this generation’s work style.
