The need for flexible work environments that offer a variety of settings for different types of workers, motivates employees to give their best. Remedy Partners, a young, innovative healthcare technology company, with offices in Darien, CT, and New York City, realizes that while designated seats of open collaborative benching can be used for teaming, there also must be opportunities for those who need heads-down time. Remedy’s owner took inspiration from places like the New York Public Library to find a harmonious balance of open and comfortable private spaces in their new 33,000 sf suburban office in Norwalk. Open spaces have a more rugged industrial feel, while a communal library, a quiet space meant for heads-down tasks, offers a warm, homey, comfortable and quite environment. Within the library are semi-private areas like carrels, and an open communal table. The space considered a “no phone zone,” is separated visually and acoustically from the rest of the office. This library concept supports other research that suggests millennials are comfortable working in libraries, a carryover from college. These quiet spaces also can be multi-functional, serving as meeting or presentation space. The concept blurs the line between work and home, a great example of the ever-changing nature of the workplace.
