The Trade Desk is a technology company that empowers buyers of advertising. The Trade Desk provides a self-service platform that enables ad buyers to manage data-driven digital advertising campaigns using their own teams across various advertising formats, including display, video, and social, and on a multitude of devices, including computers, mobile devices, and connected TV.

While The Trade Desk’s headquarters is located in Ventura, California, rapid growth prompted the company to open another office farther south in Irvine. The Trade Desk’s people challenged the designer to provide a new space with the following characteristics: open and transparent; collaborative in a familial atmosphere, timeless and modern; and reflective of their brand and culture.

The design philosophy was to capitalize on the client’s strong brand identity and relaxed beach town vibe and marry that with a clean, curated, and sophisticated look that reflects the city of Irvine. A base pallet of a bright white was used throughout the project with accents of their secondary brand colors for a pop. With the tight construction budget these accent colors became a prominent design feature.

In some cases, the bright colors were incorporated into functional acoustic elements. A hallway lined with magenta felt separates the loud spaces from the “quiet zone,” which houses the conference rooms, some break-out space and a phone room. Panels in different shades of blue hover on the ceiling above workstations to help reduce sound travel across the open office.
The Trade Desk has a very tight-knit work culture and wanted to provide a space for employees to gather for weekly companywide check-in meetings as well group lunches and events. The space directly off of reception serves as the social hub where the entire team, and sometimes clients, can come together and gather. With hospitality in mind, the layout of the space allows for these large functions, but hides the utilities that makes these possible.

Giving back is important to The Trade Desk and because of this the design team selected ArtLifting to provide the art collection which is another key element of the space. ArtLifting empowers artists living with homelessness or disabilities through the celebration and sales of their artwork. The design team selected many vibrant pieces that directly support services in California.
