Cox Architecture Offices – Brisbane
The refurbishment of Cox Architecture's Brisbane studio took them on a journey of exploration and discovery within a space they thought they knew well – having been residents of the building since 1998.
Cox Architecture was tasked to create a refreshed contemporary aesthetic for their studio in Brisbane, Australia.
They discovered and preserved the original timber fish-bone structure and a series of cast iron columns. Stripping the brickwork exposed a remarkable patina of colour and texture that tells an evocative story of the building’s history, which they keep on-show as they add new pages to the story of Old Mineral House.
New interventions create a modern workspace but are purposefully restrained to maintain the buildings original proportions. A democratic and open approach to planning has been applied to the studio, recognising the dual drivers of fluidity and collaboration within the practice.
Adding their own contemporary layer to the building has been a fulfilling collaboration, working with local craftspeople to create an appropriate outcome for a unique building and providing for the future needs of a contemporary practice.
