Newly acquiring the cycling aerodynamics company Alphamantis in Montreal, technology company Garmin opened their new aero-testing laboratory in Montreal at the Wireworks loft. Open space flexibility was important to allow for experiments and research.

The real challenge in planning this compact 3000 sq ft space was having a space of 20 ft x 25 ft to incorporate a wind tunnel (including the required clearances) fully displayed echoing the “don’t hide it, flaunt it” approach; while accommodating the engineers, testing workbenches, offices, and auxiliary areas.

Extremely high ceilings were scaled down with repetitive floating suspended lighting highlighted with a simple large blue directional graphic that connects the entrance to the work area.

To benefit from these high ceilings a large portable staircase adds an element of color while accessing space above for additional storage and access to drop down utilities for various infrastructure for experiments.

A restraint and consistency in finishes unifies the project and solidifies how simplicity can brand an environment .
