This 15,000 square foot renovation project embraced the historic nature of the former Bacon’s Department Store into a modern Law Office. Gray Ice Higdon is a newly founded law firm specializing in the protection of their client’s innovations through patents, sales and acquisitions, and litigation strategies in areas which include commercial and intellectual property. They wanted the space to feel modern, updated, and worthy of their national clientele and own successes.

The historic and former retail nature of the existing floor plate provided some obstacles to overcome for the design team. The Gray Ice Higdon floor plan prioritized dedicated private workspaces, high-tech meeting spaces, and community driven amenity spaces for current and future talent. Flexible furniture solutions, including wide-ranging postures, were high priorities for the end user, while also providing clients and employees with the power of choice for where and how they want to work withing the office. The finishes selected for the space were hand-picked to feel modern, substantial, and durable. Each team member was able to select their own tackboard and guest chair upholstery, so everyone felt involved in the process. Uncommon selections such as a woven LVT and Portuguese inspired wall tiles were selected for the Work Café while wood tones and bourbon-colored upholsteries were integrated into meeting spaces and private offices to add warmth and a feeling of home.

Even though most employees at Gray Ice Higdon have access to a private office, not all of them have access to natural light, so the client design committee wanted to integrate amenity spaces to make sure all team members felt supported and appreciated. This included an energizing Work Café, an open work lounge with privacy lounge furniture and a communal library, and a wellness room including a shower for employees who cycle to work each day.

Being good stewards of their community is another factor that sets Gray Ice Higdon apart from other clients. They were passionate about filling their new space with local and original artwork and partnered with Wheelhouse Art Gallery to find the perfect pieces throughout.
