  • BOX Studios completed the Roku offices with an industrial modern design in Chicago, Illinois.

The streaming device giant, Roku, has seen rapid growth recently, adding new offices nationally and internationally in cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen, Amsterdam, and New York. And like so many other innovative, cutting-edge companies, Roku decided to take root in Chicago’s lively and historic Fulton Market neighborhood in the newly constructed 320 N. Sangamon St. building.

Roku challenged BOX Studios with the creation of a design which would incorporate elements of Chicago architecture and culture while harmonizing with their established design standards. Utilizing BOX’s proprietary cultural survey, key stakeholders came together and informed the design team about the company’s mission, culture, and needs. In turn, BOX developed a concept that was distinctly “Chicago” but also recognizably “Roku”.

A refined, industrial palette uses accents of blackened steel, sealed concrete, light wood, and exposed Chicago brick veneer. The concept is further reiterated in the reception area and the break room with custom street art installations by local artists that incorporate movie-themed “Easter eggs” based on movies filmed in Chicago. The result is an architectural tapestry that celebrates the colorful urban art of the surrounding area and reinforces Roku’s business of providing movies and entertainment to the masses.
