Motional Offices – Pittsburgh
Desmone designed Motional’s relocation to Mill 19 in Pittsburgh aimed to centralize their engineering team in a cohesive workspace, featuring extensive interior renovation and innovative design elements for collaboration and inspiration.
Motional, an autonomous vehicle company, previously operated out of three separate buildings. However, with the strategic decision to relocate to Mill 19, the aim was to centralize all 200 engineers within a single, cohesive workspace. Positioned as one of three tenants in the three-story structure, which rose under the historic steel skeleton of Mill 19, once a bustling bar mill, Motional seized the opportunity for expansion. Their relocation presents the potential to double the engineering team’s size in the foreseeable future, from its current 200 members to a formidable force of up to 400 engineers.
The project’s scope entailed an extensive interior renovation, transforming the space into an optimal environment for the company’s operations. Collaboration was key, involving multiple teams to craft a workspace that caters to the demands of rapid innovation and teamwork. The newly designed space boasts several conference areas, captivating graphics, and an expansive open office layout featuring workstations, collaboration booths, phone rooms, various meeting spaces, and a convenient snack grab-n-go area.
Adjacent to the workstations lies a spacious kitchen, complete with a community catering station and a welcoming social lounge, fostering mobility and camaraderie among employees. Emphasizing the importance of fostering innovation, the space is curated to inspire Motional’s employees to continue their groundbreaking work in shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
