Les Mills International Offices – Auckland
STACK Interiors designed a rejuvenating and collaborative workspace for Les Mills International in Auckland, emphasizing sustainability and natural elements to create a balanced environment that complements the energetic staff.
Les Mills International (LMI) embarked on a transformative workplace project with the purpose of creating a rejuvenating and collaborative environment for their high-energy, diverse professional team. The objective was to design a functional, sustainable and engaging space that embodied the essence of the Les Mills brand while being directly adjacent to their flagship gym on Victoria Street West. This strategic location not only expanded their Auckland CBD presence but also allowed for a complementary relationship between the office and gym environments.
The workplace was designed to reflect Les Mills’ cultural values—healthiness and happiness—aiming to reinforce these within their high-energy professional staff. The space needed to cater uniquely to their diverse teams, including videographers, musicians, operations, finance, marketing, and leadership groups, who collaborate to deliver premium fitness experiences globally. Rather than mirroring the energetic vibe of their gyms, the office was conceived as a sanctuary where staff could rejuvenate and recharge, fostering productivity through a balanced environment.
Strategy and Concept
The strategic approach began with detailed interrogation and evaluation of the existing space through team workshops and collaboration sessions to maximise utility and aesthetic appeal while adhering to sustainability principles. The process involved minimal demolition and focused on repurposing existing assets. Utilising the building’s unique architecture and prime location overlooking Victoria Park, the design emphasised natural synergies with the environment to enhance the workplace experience.Design Execution
The design promoted sustainability and authenticity, avoiding gimmicks, and instead leveraging a strategic use of materials like timber accents on laminates to infuse warmth and natural beauty affordably. The emphasis on natural timbers and a soothing palette provided a comforting environment conducive to both relaxation and productivity, while maximising the budget. The deliberate restraint in design mirrored the company’s high-energy brand without replicating its intensity, allowing the employees’ natural flair to animate the space. This balanced approach ensured that the workspace complemented rather than competed with the staff’s energy.
Elevating the Work
Sustainability underpinned the project, with 60% of the built environment and furnishings repurposed, significantly reducing environmental impact. Social and cultural well-being were key considerations, with design elements fostering community and collaboration. Studio spaces were included to support video production and choreography development, while also providing an outlet for exercise classes without having to leave the workplace, promoted inclusivity and engagement, pivotal to the Les Mills culture.
