Cargotec and Kalmar Shared Offices – Sofia
Cargotec’s new office in Sofia, designed by Avalant, showcases Finnish-inspired natural materials, industrial elements, and distinctive touches for HIAB, MacGregor, and Kalmar divisions’ workspaces.
Located in the heart of Sofia, Bulgaria, Cargotec’s new office spans across the 5th, 6th, and 7th floors of Office X, Building 4, and is home to three key divisions: HIAB, MacGregor, and Kalmar. With a combined office space of over 2,200 sq.m., the design embodies the essence of the company’s Finnish roots, combining natural materials, organic forms, and industrial elements to create a workspace that fosters collaboration, productivity, and well-being.
The design draws inspiration from Finland’s strong connection to nature, with a monochromatic color palette that evokes calmness and clarity. The use of natural materials like plywood and wood, alongside soft finishes and acoustic panels, provides a warm and inviting atmosphere. The interplay of fluid forms and round elements—such as curved ceilings and soft, hanging acoustic panels—soften the space, promoting a sense of comfort and openness throughout.
Industrial touches—such as visible HVAC systems, electrical installations, and exposed concrete—are juxtaposed with the soft, minimalistic materials, striking a balance between raw and refined elements. This harmonious mix highlights the adaptability of the office, where modern aesthetics meet functional design.
While the design of the three divisions shares a similar overall approach, each entity’s distinct character is reflected in specific elements. Hiab’s workstations, which span 1,017.3 sq.m. with 52 workstations, feature unique ceiling details and branding that align with their business identity. Similarly, MacGregor, occupying 487.3 sq.m. with 40 workstations, incorporates color schemes and design nuances that reflect its focus on maritime engineering, while Kalmar, covering 691 sq.m. with 48 workstations, subtly integrates its own branding and design specifics into the overall aesthetic.
The project, set to be completed between March 2024 and November 2024, also includes comprehensive technical development and on-site coordination. The design team managed the concept interior design, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) assignments, procurement, and ensured meticulous quality control during the construction phase, ensuring every detail was carefully executed to meet the company’s high standards.
Cargotec’s Sofia office exemplifies a modern workplace that not only reflects the brand’s identity and heritage but also provides an inspiring and functional environment for its employees to thrive.
