Mirador Therapeutics Offices – San Diego
McFarlane Architects designed the Mirador Therapeutics Offices in San Diego as a sophisticated architectural statement, reflecting the company’s innovative spirit and commitment to scientific discovery through expansive views and a collaborative open layout.
Mirador brings a fresh and transformative perspective to the world of immune-mediated, inflammatory, and fibrotic diseases; areas that have long challenged traditional therapeutic approaches. The company’s mission is rooted in pushing the limits of what’s scientifically possible to improve patient health and outcomes. At its core, Mirador is driven by the power of data and biology, decoding complex biological signals into actionable insights. Through these insights, Mirador unlocks smarter, faster, and more precise therapies, ultimately accelerating the path from scientific discovery to clinical impact.
The origins of Mirador are deeply connected to an experienced and proven team. The company was founded by the same group that previously developed Prometheus Biosciences, a groundbreaking biotech venture that achieved notable success and was acquired by Merck in a multi-billion-dollar deal. Following that acquisition, the technology platform that became the foundation for Mirador originated as a derivative of that major transaction. The team’s track record of innovation and execution gave Mirador instant credibility and positioned it as a high-potential player in biotechnology.
As Mirador launched its new venture, the leadership understood that the physical environment would play a critical role in shaping the company’s identity and its culture. To bring that vision to life, they partnered with a skilled design team to develop a sophisticated space that communicated the confidence, forward-thinking spirit, and scientific precision of Mirador’s mission. The goal was not simply to create a workplace but to craft an architectural statement. An environment that could serve as a reflection of Mirador’s innovation and vision for the future.
At the time Mirador began its search, the company sought to lease approximately 50,000 square feet of space in San Diego. Market conditions were in their favor with large tenants being scarce, giving Mirador strong negotiating leverage. This dynamic sparked competition among building owners eager to bring a high-profile tenant like Mirador into their properties. Ultimately, BPI, one of the building owners, won the bid by committing to an aggressive timeline that guaranteed Mirador could begin scientific operations within nine months of signing the lease. This commitment encompassed the full process: design, engineering, permitting, and construction, all executed with remarkable speed and precision.
The guiding design principle for the project was encapsulated in the phrase: “Captivating vantage points through a sophisticated and innovative lens.” The building’s location was perched atop a hill and offered an extraordinary natural canvas with sweeping 360-degree views of the surrounding area. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls maximize these views, inviting natural light and openness throughout the space. Clean, modern lines structure the interior architecture, while the open-plan layout fosters collaboration, creativity, and growth. Every design choice, from materials to finishes, aligns with Mirador’s mission of clarity and discovery.
