Mastercard Offices – Budapest
M Moser Associates crafted the Mastercard Offices in Budapest to merge global brand identity with local culture, fostering collaboration and connection within a sustainable, hospitality-inspired workplace that reflects Hungary’s artistic heritage.
Mastercard’s new Budapest office brings together global brand values and local cultural identity within a 27,400 sq ft workplace designed to support collaboration, client engagement and team connection. Developed by M Moser, the project unites three teams under one roof while creating a workplace experience that reflects both Mastercard’s international design standards and the distinctive character of Hungary’s creative heritage.
The workplace was conceived as a hub for teamwork and interaction. By bringing previously separate teams together into a single environment, the design encourages stronger connections and more natural collaboration throughout the day. Spatial planning focuses on creating a balance between open collaboration and quieter areas for concentration, allowing employees to move easily between different modes of work.
Hospitality-inspired spaces sit at the heart of the workplace, forming social anchors where people can gather informally, share ideas or host clients. These areas create an atmosphere that is welcoming and relaxed, supporting Mastercard’s team-oriented culture while enhancing the overall workplace experience.
A defining aspect of the project is the way the brand experience has been localised to reflect Hungary’s artistic and cultural history. Rather than applying a purely global design language, the workplace incorporates local references and storytelling through curated artwork and installations. Working with local artists and curators, the design team assembled a collection of 24 artworks that trace Hungary’s creative evolution from the influential modernist period of the 1920s through to contemporary artistic voices.
This narrative continues through a series of bespoke design features integrated throughout the space. One prominent installation interprets the traditional craft of Hungarian weaving through the lens of Mastercard’s iconic brand symbol. Geometric patterns inspired by folk art are translated into a woven representation of the Mastercard circles, reinforcing themes of connection and community that underpin both the brand and the cultural reference.
The workplace also extends beyond the interior through a large terrace designed to encourage informal interaction and moments of pause during the workday. A 14-metre mural creates a striking focal point for the outdoor space while drawing people outside. Overlooking both Buda and Pest, the terrace provides a unique vantage point across the city and acts as a natural extension of the workplace’s communal areas.
Sustainability played a key role in the project, which achieved LEED Gold certification. Energy-efficient systems were integrated throughout the workplace, including chilled beam cooling, energy-monitoring systems and sensor-controlled lighting designed to reduce overall consumption. Energy Star-certified appliances and efficient lighting strategies further support operational performance.
Water-saving plumbing fixtures significantly reduce water usage, while material selections prioritised products with low volatile organic compounds to maintain healthy indoor air quality. Furniture and finishes with high recycled content were specified where possible, aligning the project with Mastercard’s broader environmental goals.
Acoustic performance was also carefully considered within the open-plan environment. Materials, furniture layouts and spatial zoning were designed to support both collaboration and concentration, ensuring that teams can work comfortably throughout the day.
The result is a workplace that reflects Mastercard’s global identity while celebrating Budapest’s rich cultural context. By combining brand storytelling, sustainable design and thoughtful workplace planning, the new office creates an environment where teams can connect, collaborate and engage with clients in a setting that feels both internationally consistent and locally authentic.
