The Turing Building Cafe and Workspace – London
Area’s design for The Turing Building Cafe and Workspace in London artfully blends refined aesthetics and functionality, creating an inviting yet professional environment that fosters connection and wellbeing amidst stunning views.
Area was appointed to design the building’s reception – including a curated café and library space – as well as the entire 21st floor, which serves as a shared workspace and exclusive business lounge, at the heart of the building’s offering.
This project presented a great opportunity for Area to be part of a development that emphasises quality, innovation, and a commitment to excellence. With its world-class views and best-in-class design, The Turing Building sets a new benchmark for Stratford and reflects the high standards of its developer, Lendlease – all designed to enable focus, connection and flow throughout the day.
Area’s design approach for The Turing Building focused on creating a warm, inviting space that combines a hospitality-driven environment with a refined aesthetic. The goal was to design a space that feels like an upscale hotel lobby, elegant in its colour palette and rich in textures and materials.
The reception, featuring a blend of natural materials and contemporary finishes, sets a sophisticated tone upon entry. Warm timber accents meet sleek stone surfaces, creating an inviting yet professional atmosphere. Flooring from Amtico and Shaw Contract grounds the space with high-performance materials that offer durability and elegance.
On Lounge TwentyOne, one of the key elements in Area’s approach was to frame the stunning views, making it a focal point of the design. The interior design draws on a refined palette of deep greens and burgundy, complemented by warm timber, marble accents, and tactile finishes. Rich in tone and texture, the space is carefully layered and thoughtfully lit, resulting in an atmosphere that feels indulgent and welcoming – reminiscent of a boutique.
Lighting helps set the tone throughout the space, like the sculptural Marset Bohemia pendant lights casting a soft, ambient glow overhead as guests arrive. A curated mix of Calacatta marbles, from elegant white to deep Rainforest Green and Silver Brown Wave, adds richness and contrast across bar and teapoint countertops, offering a timeless foundation with natural movement. Finishing touches like the Franke Maris antique brass mixer tap bring cohesion and warmth, enhancing the boutique feel with subtle golden undertone.
Lounge TwentyOne has been designed to provide occupiers with a versatile environment that balances work, social connection, and wellbeing. The expansive floor plan includes a mix of private and shared spaces, ranging from formal boardrooms to informal lounges, flexible event areas, and quiet wellness rooms, each tailored to support a wide variety of needs.
From fully equipped bar areas for hosting and unwinding, to wellness rooms for recharging, the amenities are designed with balance in mind.
The Turing Building has achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification – the highest possible rating – recognising its Net Zero Carbon design, solar panel integration and water efficiency. It is also targetingWELL Gold certification, reflecting its focus on occupant health and wellbeing.
Its digital infrastructure is rated WiredScore Platinum, while an EPC A rating confirms top-tier energy performance. The building is targeting NABERS UK 4.0 rating, demonstrating strong operational efficiency.
As a certified B Corporation with validated science-based targets through the SBTi, Area shares Lendlease’s dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. This alignment made for a natural partnership, enabling the delivery of spaces that not only perform exceptionally well but also support long-term environmental goals.
