  • In celebration of 50 years of service to Denver and the surrounding communities, Mile High Flood District set out to create a new headquarters that would reflect both its legacy and its forward-looking mission. Faced with the choice to lease or buy, the team made a bold investment in their future by purchasing a permanent headquarters. With that exciting milestone, Kestrel Design Group was brought on to reimagine a 30-year-old, two-story building into a vibrant, modern workplace that reflects the District’s mission, values, and people-first culture.

The building had existing amenities that included open stairwells, large training and meeting spaces, and a large central atrium space for gathering and engagement. Rather than start from scratch, Kestrel embraced these features, thoughtfully modernizing the space to meet current needs while staying on budget and planning for long-term growth. The result is a workplace that feels open, welcoming, and intentionally designed around how people work—and feel—every day.

Neutral textures and organic patterns create a grounding backdrop, while bold graphics and vibrant murals—pulled from the higher-chroma side of nature—add personality, movement, and moments of joy. These colorful touches reinforce brand identity, spark creativity, and support employee wellbeing by bringing warmth and inspiration into the workplace.

The finished space celebrates the District’s legacy while looking confidently ahead. It’s a place designed to support the people behind the mission, strengthen community, and bring a little bit of the outdoors in—proving that great design can be both meaningful and fun.
