  • When tech giant LinkedIn decided to establish a presence in Detroit, they partnered with SmithGroup and a team of local artists, artisans and fabricators to create a workplace that celebrates the Motor City’s culture, tenacity and entrepreneurial spirit.

The new 35,000-square-foot space is comprised of two adjacent historic structures—the Grinnell Building and Sanders Chocolate Building—and incorporates hospitality-level amenities that rival high-end environments such as a hotel or entertainment district.

The second, third and fourth floors showcase open workstations, meeting and phone rooms and employee break/lounge spaces. To support LinkedIn’s goals of enabling equitable access and positive social impact within the region, the community is invited to host meetings and events in its public and open spaces.

To give the space an authentic character and feel, reclaimed wood and artifacts from local salvage yards and antique shops were incorporated into the design. The team also got creative with the sustainable design solutions that could be integrated into this tenant build-out effort. As a result, the project has become one of many global facilities used to benchmark energy efficiency across offices.

Strategic. Bold. Impactful. This office has created a network of employment and economic opportunities for Detroit and its residents.
