Benchling Offices – San Francisco
Revel Architecture & Design transformed three floors of Macy’s former headquarters in San Francisco into the Benchling offices, seamlessly blending playful design elements with existing infrastructure to reflect the brand’s innovative spirit.
A Transformation Without the Red Tape
When Benchling took over three floors of Macy’s former corporate headquarters in a prominent San Francisco tower, they needed more than just a refresh—they needed a headquarters that truly reflected their identity. With speed as a priority, navigating city permitting wasn’t an option. Instead, rather than gutting the space, the team leaned into the existing infrastructure as a foundation for bold transformation and permit-free interventions that completely redefined the space.
From custom art installations to the smallest stylistic elements, each touchpoint reinforced the overall vision that, altogether, delivers a unique and functional new workplace—proving that transformation doesn’t always mean starting from scratch.
A Space That Speaks Without Saying a Word
The design team didn’t rely on oversized graphics or catchphrases to convey Benchling’s brand. Instead, they embraced a more playful approach, evident in the rope lighting in the breakroom, which was designed to mirror the flowing, graceful movement of Benchling’s beloved mascot, a jellyfish named JeffyP. This subtle yet meaningful detail brings personality to the space
Custom Art Instillations
Suspended above the reception, artist Claudia Bueno’s custom installation creates an unforgettable first impression. Inspired by Benchling’s mascot, JeffyP., the piece spans the ceiling with intricate, three-dimensional forms that seem to pulse with movement.
Revel worked in close coordination with the artist to ensure proper lighting, mechanical coordination, and code compliance was considered from initial design through the final instal. This close collaboration integrates the installation into the space seamlessly.
Smaller sculptural moments throughout the office reinforce the organic, flowing aesthetic, making the installation not just a visual statement but an immersive experience—one that sets the tone for innovation, creativity, and discovery the moment you walk through the door.
