FOX Architects transformed the Nuclear Energy Institute offices in Washington DC, into a forward-thinking workspace that marries professional innovation with flexibility, embodying the agency’s refreshed identity and collaborative vision.
NEI came to us with a clear and ambitious vision: to reimagine their existing office space in a way that reflected their refreshed branding strategy and addressed the evolving demands of the modern workplace. As a leading voice in the nuclear energy industry, NEI needed an environment that embodied their renewed identity while supporting a wide range of functions – from high-level board meetings with external stakeholders to dynamic, day-to-day collaboration and events.
Our challenge was to create a workplace that balanced professionalism with innovation, delivering a space that felt forward-looking yet firmly rooted in NEI’s core values. Drawing inspiration from the concept of “Nuclear Evolved,” we set out to design a more human-centered, flexible, and future-focused environment that could serve as both a stage for global dialogue and a hub for internal creativity.
With a strong architectural framework already in place, our design layered in new spatial strategies and refined finishes to capture NEI’s growth and modern direction. We softened the existing rigid, rectilinear layout with sweeping curves, introducing a sense of movement and fluidity that echoes the industry’s transformation. Cool, hard surfaces gave way to warm wood tones, soft lighting, and tactile materials – creating a more inviting, grounded atmosphere that aligns with NEI’s brand values of safety, responsibility, and innovation.
A central highlight of the transformation is the three-story stair, reimagined as a striking focal point. A custom light fixture and backlit feature wall elevate this functional core into a dramatic architectural statement – a vertical thread symbolizing connectivity, progress, and vision.
The result is a flexible, future-ready workplace that empowers NEI to host large-scale board meetings, high-profile industry events, and collaborative sessions with equal ease. Every element – from the flow of the space to the textures under hand – was chosen to reinforce NEI’s mission and foster a culture of openness, dialogue, and forward thinking. More than just an updated office, this space is the physical embodiment of the “Nuclear Evolved” ethos: a place designed not only to impress but to inspire.
