  • The HDB Singapore Office redefines the idea of a government workspace through a design that celebrates belonging, sustainability, and a deep connection to the nation’s identity. As Singapore’s public housing authority, HDB’s vision for its workplaces goes beyond functionality. It seeks to embody the very spirit of community and home that lies at the heart of its mission.

Our design concept, “The Sanctuary: Creating an Office Where You Call Home,” translates this vision into a physical experience. In today’s evolving work landscape, the office is no longer just a place of productivity. It is a space where comfort, inspiration, and a sense of belonging are essential. The design embraces a harmonious balance between modern aesthetics and natural elements, ensuring that every detail contributes to a serene and inviting atmosphere.

Each tone in the soft, thoughtful color application is rooted in a symbolic narrative. Earthy tones and natural textures, inspired by topography and urban planning, create a harmonious connection between the built environment and the landscape. Muted red accents evoke a sense of homeland, drawn from HDB’s logo and the Singaporean flag, symbolizing community and belonging while creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that resonates with Singaporean identity. Muted green represents HDB’s continuous commitment to sustainability, encouraging eco-conscious living and promoting harmony within the workspace.

Spatially, the design celebrates openness, fluidity, and human connection. Archways and curved forms introduce a gentle softness to the space, evoking comfort and visual flow while enhancing movement and communication between different zones. The interplay of organic lines and natural materials transforms the traditional office layout into a series of interconnected spaces that feel cohesive yet distinct, much like the diverse communities HDB nurtures across Singapore.

The flexible work corners, affectionately named the Watermelon Playground, Dragon Playground, Elephant Playground, and Clock Playground, draw inspiration from the iconic HDB playgrounds of the 1970s and 1980s. Paying tribute to a cherished part of Singapore’s collective memory, these zones reflect HDB’s legacy of community building. The play of textures, patterns, and vibrant forms infuses the workplace with playful energy, encouraging creativity and collaboration, much like the beloved playgrounds of the past.

The workspace is designed as a serene urban sanctuary, offering both collaboration and calm. Warm wood finishes, textured surfaces, and layered lighting create a comforting environment that supports focus and creativity. Biophilic elements are integrated throughout to promote well-being and foster a sense of balance between people and place.

Ultimately, the HDB Singapore Office stands as a reflection of HDB’s purpose of building homes, shaping lives, and strengthening communities. Through its mindful use of color, form, and materiality, the space humanizes the government office experience, offering employees a workplace that feels familiar, meaningful, and truly like home.
